Self-mastery is a word that is used quite a lot by people, but not many understand what it fully entails. That's understandable, though, as this concept is multidimensional and takes quite a bit of work to fully grasp. So, what is it really? Well, in simple words, self-mastery is the mastery of the self. It includes understanding who you really are, making yourself better in every area of life, developing self-control, constantly striving to achieve your vision, and taking charge of your thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

That is quite a mouthful, and as you can probably tell, it takes a lot of time, effort, and grit to pursue the path of self-mastery. However, it is an obvious choice to make for anyone looking to live a more fulfilling life. If you take note of the sheer amount of things you can do with self-mastery as your companion, it will be a no-brainer. So, how do you cultivate self-mastery? Let's take a look at some great strategies.

1 | Reflect On Your Inner Being

The world at large likes to focus on outer reality, but in order to cultivate self-mastery, you will need to focus on your inner self. Spend some time alone every day with your thoughts and monitor how you think without being judgmental about it. Think about what you like, what you don't like, how you feel about certain situations and people. 

Slowly, you will start getting a deeper understanding of who you are as a person. This understanding should be the starting point of any fruitful journey. The pursuit of self-mastery is no different. If you start from a place of congruence within yourself, you will already have taken the most important step towards self-mastery.

2 | Let Go Of The Pains Of The Past

One of the most unfortunate things about us humans is that we are held back by our past. We spend so much time thinking about all the things that went wrong, all the people that hurt us, all the dreams and desires that we couldn't fulfill, that it stops us from giving our best efforts in the present.

 It is okay to dwell on the past but only to learn from your mistakes. If you get stuck there, you will never be able to take charge of your thoughts and emotions. Make peace with your past, no matter how painful it was. Let bygones be bygones and do what is needed right now. You will realize just how liberating that can be.

3 | Be Mindful Of The Present

Extending on the previous point, you should make conscious efforts to be mindful of the present moment. The past is not the only place your mind likes to visit again and again. The uncertainties of the future are equally terrorizing. But you need to realize that if you put in your best effort right now, you will be much better off in the future.

And, if by chance you do not achieve your goals, at least you will be at peace knowing that you did everything you could. You have to learn to take a logical and practical view of things and life. Only then will you be able to keep your focus and attention in the present moment. This will go a long way in helping you develop self-mastery.

4 | Remove Temptations

You must have heard of the old saying, 'out of sight, out of mind.' There is a reason why this has been said over and over again. If you love chocolates, and if you have them out in the open where you can see them, you are more likely to just eat them. It doesn't matter how strong your willpower is, you will be tempted to just go for it. The same applies to all other temptations also. 

So, in order to develop self-control, you will first have to eliminate as many temptations from your life as possible. When you are working, you could keep your phone in silent mode and disable all social media. If you are trying to cut off junk food, simply don't buy them or have them lying around your house. Eliminating all these temptations will help you prioritize and focus on things that actually matter.

5 | Create Powerful Habits

A significant part of your daily actions is habitual. It is true when they say that we are creatures of habit. Most of the time, we don't even realize that we have a certain habit, be it good or bad. You can use this tendency of yours to your advantage. You could plan out what habits will add the most value to your life and your goals. Then, you need to make a conscious effort to instill these habits in your daily routine.

It might take you a few weeks to turn these conscious actions into habits, but in the end, they will become part of your autopilot actions. From there on, they will reap your benefits without you having to do too much. Similar to how passive income works. Doing so will also ensure that you are making the best use of your time. Some of the most successful people are quite particular about how they spend their time. It is a critical aspect of developing self-mastery.
